How does creatine work?

March 29th, 2009

There have been many people asking about creatine. Creatine is probably the most well known sports supplement on the market.

Here is some basic information about creatine.

Creatine is a substance that is naturally formed in our body. It is an amino acid-based compound and stores energy from the already existing amino acids and foods in the body. Some creatine rich food are fish and red meat.

Creatine is stored in human body as a compound know as “phosphocreatine”, which further works as a reservoir of phosphate. Phosphocreatine is a substance that stores energy in the muscular tissues and provides energy for the muscular contractions. Phosphate produced from creatine is needed for regenerating adenosine triphosphate (ATP) molecules, which is the main fuel for the enzyme motors of the muscle in initial high-intensity muscle activity.

During muscle contraction, ATP (adenosine tri phosphate) loses a phosphate molecule to create energy and gets converted to adenosine di phosphate (ADP). In order to produce more energy ADP must be converted back to ATP. Now when ATP is depleted, creatine acts as a source of phosphate and converts the ADP molecule to ATP molecule.

The more creatine is availaible to the body, the faster the body can produce ATP molecules, so that more and more energy is availaible for the muscle contractions. This is how creatine acts as a great energy source for short bursts of exercise such as sprinting, bodybuilding and other athletic activities.

Protein In Diet & Bulking Up

February 21st, 2009

Protein is part of our diet and is the group term for the delivery of a range of amino acids. Our diet provides us with 28 amino acids. There are 8 essentials that cannot be manufactured in our bodies. These amino acids are ingested as whole protein and are then broken down to their individual components and either used or are stored and an amino acid depot ready for our bodies to make new proteins (for example, muscle, hair, nails, skin, enzymes, hormones, antibodies, etc).

Women ask all the time if drinking protein shakes will make them “bulk up”. It’s a common misconception among women that eating protein and weight training will make them form unwanted gigantic muscles. The truth is, if it were that easy to build the kind of muscles you see in body building magazines, you’d see more people who look like that! It takes a ton of hard work and discipline to “bulk up” and consuming more protein in your diet isn’t enough. If you work out, if you sometimes skip meals and if you’re embarking on a new eating plan, a whey protein supplement will be a great addition to your eating plan.

Whey Protein - Nature’s Amazing Muscle Builder by William McRand

February 4th, 2009

Are you concerned about taking care of your body before and after strenuous activities or workouts?

Do you try to avoid supplements that contain additives and possible side effects? If you are interested in better health and improved physical fitness you have surely heard that bodybuilders and other athletes are turning to a simple, natural supplement called whey protein.

WHY DO ATHLETES USE WHEY PROTEIN?

Protein levels are depleted through exercise. Muscles require amino acids to prevent deterioration, give endurance and build mass. Proteins supply these amino acids to the muscles which is why athletes use whey protein.

WHAT IS WHEY PROTEIN?

Commercial whey protein comes from cow’s milk. Whey is the by-product of making cheese and was
usually thrown away as a waste product. Now researchers know that whey protein is high quality,
natural protein that is rich with amino acids essential for good health and muscle building. It is
naturally found in mother’s milk and also used in baby formula. It is being considered for use as a fortifier of grain products because of its considerable health benefits and bland flavor.

Although protein is also found in other foods such as meat, soy and vegetables, whey protein is
proven to have the highest absorption (digestion) levels in comparison to all others.

WHO SHOULD CONSIDER USING WHEY PROTEIN?

Whey protein has many health benefits including immune support, bone health, sports health, weight management and overall well being. Because amino acids are ‘building blocks’ for the human body it is sometimes used by patients to speed up the healing of wounds or burns.

The high quality protein that comes from whey makes it a recommended choice for those who need
optimal benefits from restricted diets including diabetics, those on weight management diets and
even ill patients not able to consume enough protein in their diet to assist with healing.

CAN WHEY PROTEIN BE DANGEROUS?

Whey protein is a food and so it does not have have the risks associated with other supplements.

That said, too much of anything carries risks. Extremely high use of whey protein can overload the
liver which can cause serious problems. Moderation is always recommended.

If you are lactose intolerant you might try whey protein isolate which has less than 1% lactose and
should be tolerable for most users. Whey protein is a natural and healthy way to bring protein into your diet and increase.
