How does creatine work?

March 29th, 2009

There have been many people asking about creatine. Creatine is probably the most well known sports supplement on the market.

Here is some basic information about creatine.

Creatine is a substance that is naturally formed in our body. It is an amino acid-based compound and stores energy from the already existing amino acids and foods in the body. Some creatine rich food are fish and red meat.

Creatine is stored in human body as a compound know as “phosphocreatine”, which further works as a reservoir of phosphate. Phosphocreatine is a substance that stores energy in the muscular tissues and provides energy for the muscular contractions. Phosphate produced from creatine is needed for regenerating adenosine triphosphate (ATP) molecules, which is the main fuel for the enzyme motors of the muscle in initial high-intensity muscle activity.

During muscle contraction, ATP (adenosine tri phosphate) loses a phosphate molecule to create energy and gets converted to adenosine di phosphate (ADP). In order to produce more energy ADP must be converted back to ATP. Now when ATP is depleted, creatine acts as a source of phosphate and converts the ADP molecule to ATP molecule.

The more creatine is availaible to the body, the faster the body can produce ATP molecules, so that more and more energy is availaible for the muscle contractions. This is how creatine acts as a great energy source for short bursts of exercise such as sprinting, bodybuilding and other athletic activities.

The human body needs a constant supply of protein to repair existing cells and to build healthy new cells. In fact, the human body replaces skin every seven years, fat cells every thirteen months, the lining in the digestive tract every three to four days, and builds muscle tissue daily. Protein also plays an essential role in the production of hormones, blood hemoglobin, antibodies, and new muscle tissue.

Under a rigorous exercise or athletic training regimen, the human body requires an enhanced supply of essential protein. Advanced Pharmaceutical Research created this Whey Protein product to ensure superior conditioning and muscular development. Over the years scientists have developed numerous methods to evaluate protein quality, among which are Protein Efficiency Ratio (PER), Net Protein Utilization (NPU), and Biological Value (BV). Regardless of the testing methodology, whey protein is always rated at the top of the scale.

Whey proteins naturally contain high amounts of branched-chain amino acids (BCAA’s) and glutamic acid, which enhance muscle recovery and nitrogen balance. BCAA’s comprise about one-third of the muscle tissue and up to 10% of the fuel required in muscle activity. Advanced Pharmaceutical Research uses only proteins which have been processed under carefully regulated temperature conditions. High heat processing coagulates or “denatures” the protein molecules, which diminishes their potency and assimilation. Our superior ingredients and controlled processing yield an amino acid profile that is 95% un-denatured.

We have also fortified our Whey Protein with hydrolyzed whey peptides, taurine, and glutamine, which has been shown to maintain nitrogen balance, accelerate muscle recovery, and strengthen the immune system. This is especially important since high-intensity exercise taxes the immune system. A proprietary blend of digestive aids has also been included to help digestion and assimilation.
